Lets get to Work!!!

Lets get to Work!


We are beginning to really start pumping  up the work this semester. We are really going to be pushing lots of work for your students. Every night your student will have home work so please check their white AGENDA diary book for what homework is due the following day.

English


We are continuing to write many different stories in our Blue Book journals. The students are encouraged to practice their writing at home as well. 

We are currently reading the story Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe. This is a story about two sisters that act differently. One sister Nyasha is a very and giving girl who loves the world. Her sister Manyara is a mean and angry girl who think she deserves to be queen. You should ask your students what happens in the story, who got to be queen, and why? Its a great story that teaches valuable lessons.


Elements of a Story


We are learning about the different elements that make up a fictional story. These elements can then be used with the students to create their own fictional stories.

Setting: The setting of the story is where and when the story takes place.

Characters: Who is in the story.

Plot: Is what happens in the story.

Conflict: The problem of the story.

For homework, have your student practice writing different stories they come up with in their imagination. Have them correct the stories to make sure they have capital letters, full stops, and have used words correctly.


Math


We are currently learning about measurment and the metric system. We have using different measuring tools to measure: Length, Capacity, and Mass.

Below are the different units of measure the students are using as well as the terms to help them remember what each is used for.

Length: Measure the distance between two points.
Unit: 
Millimeters (mm),  Very Small
Centimeters (cm),  Fingernail
Meters (m),  100cm
Kilometers, Very Long, 1000meters
Tool to measure: Ruler, measuring tape, meter wheel


Capacity: Measure how much liquid can can container hold.
Unit:
Milliliters (ml), Just a drop
Liters: 1000ml
Tool to Measure: Beaker, cup, cylinder


Mass: Measure how much does it weigh
Unit:
Grams (g) very light
Kilograms (kg) very heavy, 1000grams
Tool to Measure: Scale, Balance









Students are to make sure they know and understand this information. Make sure they are practicing measuring different objects at home.


Division

Please make sure the students are practicing division at home. As we continue with math, students are expected to visit math sites to practice their division skills as well as addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. Below are websites with games to practice their skills.

Please make sure your students are practicing muliplication at home. They can use these sites to help them with their multiplication skills

Science

For the last 2 weeks we have been learning about body systems. The students will be learning about 4 body systems in total. Please view the following pictures carefully, and note the vocabulary that goes along with each system. The body systems are located in the student book from page 36 onward, but these pictures will help your student as well. Make sure they understand which body system does what and why, as well as where everything is located.




The Circulatory System





The circulatory system is made up of the:

Heart: Pump blood to the body

Arteries (red): Carry blood with oxygen from the heart to the body.

Veins (blue): Bring blood  back to the heart to get more oxygen.




The Blood


The blood carries different things with different functions.

Red Blood Cells: Give oxygen to the body

White Blood Cells: Fight Disease and illness

Platelets: Help cuts and bruises heal (scabs)

Plasma: Delivers food and nutrients to the body


The Skeletal System

Joints


Make bones bend together. There are 2 types of joints:






 The Hinge Joint                                 The ball and socket Joint


The Respiratory System

Controls our breathing. The lungs, Trachea, and Diaphragm and the vocabulary words to remember.





The Nervous System

Controls our body from the brain and the spinal chord.



We will cover the digestive system next week!


Please make sure you are reviewing the homework Agenda book, playing the math games above for practice, and learning the vocabulary of the body systems above. 

Also Please make sure you bring in a flash drive so I can put the EMSA review practice on it for homework. The EMSA is coming up and we need all the practice we can get.
