What have we been up to in Mr. Joe's Class?

English

WALT: Tell about a Fact or Opinion

We are have completed our Non fiction text called The Journey of the Humpback Whales on page 91-114 in the English book. The homework that was due last week is still missing from many students. Please make sure your student has completed the homework pages that go with this Whale story on pages 115-126 in the English book.

This week we have started a new Non fiction story called Antarctica Land of the Penguins written by Jonathan and Angela Scott. This story can be found on page 211-242. There are many facts about Antarctica as well as Penguins. For homework this week I want students to complete the workbook section from this story on pages 243-254. This assignment is due Sunday November 24, 2013. Please make sure your student has this completed. Also Make sure the students re-read the story so they can complete the homework for this section.

We are currently learning about FACT and OPINIONS in class. Ask your student what the difference is between a fact and an opinion.

Math

WALT: MULTIPLY

Multiplication is Repeated Addition:

6 x 4

is

6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24

The following pictures show the

times tables we are currently

working with in class. Students are

expected to know each times table

this year. Please have students

practice these at home as well as completing all math homework. Also there are websites listed

below that can help with the students learning these times tables.

The following pictures show different multiplication arrays. We use different objects to make multiplication arrays in which show students what multiplying actually is. Look at the following array for a clear understanding of multiplication.

You can also make equal groups:

3 x 5 =?
3 groups each with 5 = 15

Here are more examples to help you:

The students have been enjoying learning to do multiplication facts. Here are some pictures that show them using math centers inside our classroom:

What Have We Been Up To in Mr. Joe's Class

English

We have recently passed out our English reading book which looks like this:

Within this book are both fiction and non fiction stories we will read with your student. There are also activities that the students will complete within the class as well as at home.

The students have been very excited about learning about the two different kinds of text in class which are:

FICTION: Text that contains imaginary events, characters that are not real.

NON FICTION: Text that includes information about real people, places, events.

Recently we have been reading the Non Fiction Text: The Journey of the Humpback Whales written by Andy Belcher.. This story is located on page 91 of the Reading Time English text book.

Students are encouraged to work on the activity pages from this story in their text book for Homework. Page: 115-126

 Math

In math we are currently learning about subtraction. The students know that they have to make sure then they are subtracting two numbers that the larger number goes on top. The students will say stack, stack, stack!

When we are solving for a problem we must remember the rule:

If the top number is smaller than the bottom number we must borrow from the number to the right. This means we will borrow a ten from the ten from the tens column and give it to the needy number in the ones column. In the example above to the right, you cannot take away 9 from 5, so we will borrow a ten (1) from the 6, and this will now turn into a 5. Now you will subtract.

Here are some pictures of the students at our math centers:

Get ready boys, next week we are going to start multiplication!!!

 Science

We are currently in the unit of Pollution. You can find this is your Science Student book from page 4-11, in your practical science books pages 6-11, and your homework book Unit 1.

We have been talking about the different pollution we create on our earth as humans such as Air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. If we are not careful and and use less and reduce, reuse, and recycle our earth will not be as beautiful as it currently is.
